President Trump’s first term in office saw his damage to the LGBTQ community mostly as a byproduct of other decisions: judicial appointments, empowerment of anti-LGBTQ actors (Mike Pence, Betsy DeVos) and the reversal of Obama-era protections. His harmful policies came alongside occasional pro-gay rhetoric and expressions of personal tolerance (“I have no problem with gay people.”) These mixed messages left many queers confused.
Trump’s actions during his second term have cleared things up for everyone. His attacks of the LGBTQ community in the first year of his second term have been explicit, centralized, and ideologically coherent.
